TOWNSHEND ACT OF 1767 Townshend Revenue Act of 1767 Second attempt at taxing colonists, it put tax on; glass, lead, paper, paint, and tea Named after Charles Townshend, Chancellor of the Exchequer in Britain Britain wanted to prove that they could tax the colonies Resulted in revolt from people which in turn caused the Boston Massacre on March 5,1770

TEA ACT OF 1773 Tea Act of 1773 Left a small tax on tea, the colonists were still angered This was a plot from the British to make the colonist submit to taxation This lead to the Boston Tea Party on December 16,1773

COERCIVE ACTS OF 1774 Coercive Acts of 1774 Also known as the Intolerable Acts The British closed the port of Boston until the tea was paid for Quartering Acts Allowed the British redcoats to stay in peoples houses no matter what These acts lead to the first Continental Congress meeting on September 5, 1774 in Philadelphia

THOMAS PAINE He was an angered colonists who wrote the famous booked named Common Sense The book was published in January 1776 and sold over 100,000 copies This book invoked anger in the colonists which was one of the biggest reasons for the colonists to revolt

CONTINENTAL ARMY The people who often joined the Continental Army were: Young Poor, Landless Willing to endure the hardship The army was lead by General George Washington

LEXINGTON & CONCORD This battle was on April 19, 1775 The American forces knew that they were outnumbered and out skilled when the British came The Continental Army was ordered to retreat from the front lines A shot was fired while retreating and neither side knows who shot it, it was named the shot heard around the world

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE Announced that we were tired of British rule and wanted to be our own independent nation It was submitted on June 28, 1776 July 2, 1776 Congress voted for Independence July 4, 1776 the document and decision were released to the public

VICTORY AT YORKTOWN After losing Yorktown in 1776 to the British, the Continental Army launched an attack British General Cornwallis surrendered on October 19,1781 They were surrounded by American and French forces by both land and sea Treaty of Paris was signed on February 1783
