1 The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is an exciting self-development Program available to all young people worldwide equipping them with life skills to make a difference to themselves, their communities and their world. Mental or physical ability, social circumstance, cultural or geographical background should never be a barrier. The Award is not an academic achievement but rather an opportunity to develop or be recognized for your extra curricular activities and interests. To provide a challenge for young people between the ages of 14 and 25.

2 The Award Concept……is one of individual challenge. It offers a balance, non-competitive program of voluntary activities which encourages personal discovery and growth, self-reliance, perseverance and responsibility. PURPOSE: Recognition Resume Scholarships Motivation Personal Challenge Goal Setting and Achieving Personal Development

3 History Founded by His Royal Highness Prince Philip to encourage personal development and community involvement for young people. The programme is open to any person between the ages of 14 and 25. Participants achieve the award by attaining personally established goals in the areas of Community Service, Skill Development, Physical Fitness, and Adventurous Journey.

5 Physical Recreation If you sweat, it’s REC! You can do any activity that you choose … rollerblading, biking, hockey, volleyball, basketball, or any sports! However, you can only count up to 2 hours a week!

6 Community Service To voluntarily provide assistance where needed in the community, school, or an organization. Volunteering at a hospital or organization, helping in your school, etc. Remember to spread out your volunteer time over the full 6, 12, or 18 months.

7 Adventurous Journey An outdoor adventure or wilderness experience. Hiking, Canoeing, Snowshoeing, etc. You should be involved in the planning, and leadership of the trip. Must include: > Preliminary Training > Practice Journey > Qualifying Journey Igloo Making Map Reading

8 Skill To encourage discovery and development of personal interests and social, vocational and practical skills To use your leisure time productively! Examples: Model Building, Knitting, Writing Poetry or Books, Piano, Drums, Music, etc. Something that you can work on and continue to build skills in over time….done over the entire 6, 12 or 18 months.

9 Residential Project * Gold Level requirement, however participants may complete the requirement while working on any level. To learn to work with people who are not your usual friends on a planned project or training. Normal Duration; not less than five consecutive days, four nights away. Exceptions apply.

12 There are 3 levels to The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program: BRONZE awarded locally SILVER Awarded local and in ceremony at Government House GOLD Awarded at Government House and by a member of the Royal family

13 To Register Fill out the form on the brochure, get your parents to sign it, then send it in with $30 for the registration fee. You will be sent a Record Book in return. This is where you keep track of all of the things that you do. It also has to be signed off by an adult for each activity you do.

15 The International Award Association The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a member of the International Award Association. The International Award is an exciting self-development Programme available to all young people worldwide equipping them with life skills to make a difference to themselves, their communities and their world. To date over 5 million young people from over 100 countries have been motivated to undertake a variety of voluntary and challenging activities – so why not get involved?
