Phrases Phrases are groups of words that come together to act as one part of speech.

Appositive A single word that renames another noun or pronoun. For example, find the appositive in the following sentence. Esther, my sister with dark hair, sang a song. Which word is renaming Esther?

Appositive Phrases The appositive phrase is the appositive PLUS all the words modifying it. Now find the whole appositive phrase (all the other words modifying sister ) Esther, my sister with the dark hair, sang a song.

Notice that the entire appositive phrase is set off by commas. Esther, my sister with dark hair, sang a song. To diagram these, put them in parentheses after the noun that they are renaming.
