2. to provide public services Governments exist to…. build infrastructure: things like sewer systems and roads that individuals could not afford to do on their own Governments make and enforce laws to protect the health and safety of all people

4. to provide for and control the economy Governments pass laws to control or govern the economy of the nation: print money, control the flow of money, set interest rates (for borrowing money), etc. This is why we have the Federal Reserve

So is the United States a “democracy” or a “republic”? In a republic, citizens elect representatives to vote on issues. Also in a republic, ideas are debated at an assembly of representatives. Therefore, a republic is a name given for a government that uses representative democracy.
