representative democracy/republic people elect representatives to make laws and govern

autocracy/dictatorship/ totalitarian /authoritarian “auto” = self One person controls all aspects of life and citizens have no way to influence or improve the government

secular vs. theocratic secular government - not tied to any religion theocratic government – – “theo” = god – religion is the source of power and the law

monarchy rule passes down through a royal family constitutional monarchy a monarch’s power is limited by a constitution

oligarchy rule by the few; power is gained through wealth, the military, or social position

unitary style of power structure central/federal/national government has the most power

federalism Power within the government is divided between the national government and states/provinces

confederation A loose union of independent territories/states/provinces; individual units retain the most power
