How were the Rockers, Mods and Hippies influenced by the 1950s? What was different about these sub-cultures from the 1950s?
2
Rockers Rockers arose out of the 1950s Teddy Boys. They listened to American rock music, especially Elvis Presley and Grene Vincent. Wore leather jackets Listened to rock music Drove motorbikes They often had road races and stopped at certain cafes. They often bought the motobikes, stripped them down and modified them. They used the bikes to intimidate others and project their masculinity. They often had wild hairstyles like their rock star. They hated drugs. They usually wore full motorcycle boots or Winkelpickers (sharp pointed shoes).
3
Mods Wore Parka Jackets Rode Scooters Rival gang to the Rockers There were some fights between them and the Rockers in 1964 on May Bank Holiday weekend in Brighton, Margate and Clacton beach. They arose out of a late 1950s subculture called the modernists who listened to jazz. They tended to wear suits, listen to soul, ska and R&B and drive Vespa scooters. Female mods tended to wear androgynous clothing. They often used amphetamine drugs and partied all night.

Hippies Long hair Love nature Love peace Went on peace marches Went on marches against nuclear weapons Smoked weed Took psychedelic drugs like LSD

‘ I pretty much wore what my Dad did. Sunday suit for church, overalls for work, and a shirt and tie when I went out. A couple of my friends started to buy jeans from America. You should have heard the rude comments from my neighbours when they turned up to my house…but they looked so cool!’ (David Rimmer 19, describing what he wore at the end of the 1950’s.) How far does source B make source A surprising?

Drugs Teenagers took a lot more drugs in the 1960s. Amphetamines (drugs that keep you awake) were taken by the Mods. Hippies smoked marijuana and took LSD (psychedelic drugs). Rockers didn’t tend to take drugs. This was because drugs were easier to buy and because there was demand for them from new sub- cultures. It harmed some teenagers mental health as it changed the chemistry of their brain. LSD inspired music and art, as you can see here. C – How did the use of drugs change in the 1960s? B /A– How did the use of drugs change in the 1960s and why did this change?

Consumerism In the early 1960s Great Britain’s 5 million teenagers spent £800 million on themselves. They bought clothes including mini-skirts, cosmetics, records, cinema ticket, mopeds, motorbikes, cars and more. Companies targeted teenagers by advertising specifically to them to get them to buy their products. This could only happen as teenagers had more money in the 1960s to spend on themselves as wages had increased. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lV_vvFB1Hk C – How did teenagers become greater consumers? B /A– How did teenagers become greater consumers and why did this happen? How can you tell that this advert is targeting teenagers?
