Cloning Benefits Miranda Piccioli Pd. 3 Mrs. Whitney

Thesis Cloning is beneficial to society because it can save endangered species, produce the best animals for food production, and it can save human lives.

Why I Chose This Topic I chose this topic because I am interested in biology and the advances it gives people. Cloning was a major advancement in science recently and I wanted to know more about it since we did not discuss it in great detail in AP Biology.

Counter Argument 1 People say that cloned animals die off quickly and require more care that normal animals Surrogate mothers can die if not given a cesarean section delivery because the clones are bigger than a normal animal the mother would sexually produce Cloned animals face many health problems such as cancer and liver failure

Point One It can save endangered species. – By saving endangered species, scientists would be restoring the world’s diversity – The world needs to save endangered species in order to sustain species that are necessary for the human race to survive – Without the species that are endangered, entire ecosystems could be obliterated which would result in groups of people dying off as well

Counter Argument 2 Opponents of cloning methods say that since clones do not live as long as normal animals, due to severe diseases such as cancer and liver failure among others, that the diseases can enter the human population through consumption of the cloned animals Although, the FDA had not had the opportunity to evaluate the safety of consuming cloned animals and their associated food products

Point Two It can produce the best animals for food production. – FDA had released its final safety report on cloned animals and an FDA official declared, “Meat and milk from clones of cattle, swine and goats and their offspring are as safe to eat as food from conventionally bred animals.” – Cloning allows farmers to choose their best animals and reproduce the exact same animal in order to maintain those perfect genes – Animal cloning allows for the rapid distribution of the best genetics from proven animals to provide consistent, healthful, and safe meat and milk for human consumption in a reliable manner

Counter Argument 3 People whom are against cloning seem to think that cloning is unnatural and unholy due to certain religious practices Since cloning does not involve sexual reproduction between a male and female organism, they believe it is artificial and not accepted by God According to their religion, this is a power only God should have and not humans because we are not worthy of that power However, not everybody has the same opinion about God since there are 8,000 different cultures in the world

Point Three It can save human lives and create them. – Cloning is used to create humans if a couple cannot have children of their own for various reasons – Cloning is used for stem cell research and therapy which can help save human lives – Pluripotent (embryonic) stem cells offer the possibility of a renewable source of replacement cells and tissues to treat a myriad of diseases, conditions, and disabilities including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, spinal cord injury, stroke, burns, heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

Conclusion Cloning saves endangered species from becoming extinct which are needed for the existence of the environment they live in that humans need. Cloning produces the best animals for consumption because it replicates the best genes in the animals that produce safe and healthy foods. Cloning saves human lives by using stem cells to repair damaged organs and tissues. Also, it has proven that stem cells can be used, through cloning, to treat life threatening diseases.
