1 Ecological Society of America Data Sharing Workshops Bruce Wilson, on behalf of Cliff Duke

2 Summary points http://www.esa.org/science_resources/datasharing.php Initiated from a “Society Summit” in 2004 Four workshops, starting in 2006 – Data Registries – Data Centers – Obstacles to Data Sharing – Incentives for Data Sharing

3 Key outcomes ESA enabling “Data Papers” Papers in ESA journals must publish data – Any persistent archive – Dryad Data project: http://datadryad.orghttp://datadryad.org NSF funded project, led by NESCent Based on DSpace. Focus on getting the data, less on data curation Will accept most any format, including Excel Provide secure repository and persistent identifiers In many ways, US leads; huge variations across international science

4 Interesting Barriers Some technical, mostly social Researchers rewarded for papers, not data Sharing data has short-term disincentives – Takes time, others could scoop – Others can find mistakes Ownership and intellectual property Sensitive data (human subjects, T&E) Overambitious archive schemes (how much metadata is enough?)
