Early History The trumpet is one of the oldest instruments It was first used for signals in China around 2000B.C. Around Roman times the trumpet was used in the military The first musical use was around 1300A.D.

More History In the 1500's, Nuremburg, Germany became the center of trumpet making During this time the trumpet had no valves It’s main uses were to double the Timpani

Musical Uses During the 1700’s the trumpet producers started adding crooks to the trumpet this allowed players to play more notes in different keys. Before this invention the trumpet was limited to one key center and could only play notes in the harmonic series the specific key in use.

The Valve Trumpet In 1815 the valve trumpet was introduced to the world This allowed the player’s to play chromatically making them equivalent to other wind instruments This modification also encouraged composers of this time to write solo literature for the trumpet

Early Solo Works The top two Solo trumpet works that came out of this time period (19century) were the Hummel Trumpet Concerto and the Haydn Trumpet Concerto These pieces showed of the Musical splendor and the chromatic capabilities of the new improved valve trumpet

Later Solo Works Works from the 20 th and 21 st Century include the Halsey Stevens, Artunian, Telemann, and Tomasi trumpet Concertos. The most famous of these is the Artunian, it is the flashiest piece written for trumpet and one of the most technique challenging

Etude Book The first book I recommend every trumpet student owning is the Arbans book This book is considered the trumpet bible to almost all trumpet players

Listening Listening is one of the most important parts of playing any musical instrument If you have no idea what a good sound is you will never have a good sound yourself It is all so very important for stylistic reasons, Jazz is much different then classical style, therefore you must listen to both in order to play them correctlyJazz classical

Different technique Styles One of the oldest techniques for the trumpet is mouth piece buzzing A newer style that is only about a hundred years old is Adams technique where all you do is concentrate on the sound you produce The newest method uses rolling in and out of the chops this seems to be one of the most productive methods for playing the trumpet, however it is only 5 years old and new to the market

Types of mouthpieces There are many different mouthpiece manufactures, the most common mouthpiece used by beginner's is the Bach 7c When playing lead in jazz band players tend to use a shallower mouthpiece allowing them to play higher like any Bobby Shoe mouthpiece For classical playing players tend to use a Bach 1 1/2 c which is a very dark sounding mouthpiece and is very deep
