Learning Objectives Interpret displacement diagrams with respect to the rise, fall, and dwell of a cam follower during a cycle. Identify different methods for calculating motion transition in displacement diagrams.

Cam Terminology Cam profile: The shape of the surface upon which the follower has contact –For a face or barrel cam, the shape of the groove Oscillate: To move back and forth in a repeating fashion Displacement: The distance that a follower rises or falls during a portion of the cycle

Cam Terminology Dwell: Period of time for which the follower does not rise or fall during a portion of the cycle Cycle: Cam movement from a home position to other positions and then back home –In the case of a round follower, one 360° revolution of the cam Base circle: A circle that represents the shape of a cam that would result in no movement of the follower
