3 Mineral Structure Mineral: Naturally formed, inorganic solid with a definite crystalline structure Most are made up of compounds of several different elements

4 Crystals Crystals are formed from repeating patterns of atoms that are present throughout the mineral.

6 Two Groups of Minerals Silicates –Contain oxygen and silicon –Makes up more than 90% of Earth’s crust Non Silicates –Do not contain oxygen and silicon

7 Uses of Minerals Metallic Minerals – good conductors of heat and electricity. –airplanes, cars, computers, electronic equip. Nonmetallic Minerals – good insulators of electricity. –roads, buildings, bridges, other structures Gemstones – Rare and colorful. Used in jewelry.
