Mineral Structure Mineral: Naturally formed, inorganic solid with a definite crystalline structure Most are made up of compounds of several different elements

Crystals Crystals are formed from repeating patterns of atoms that are present throughout the mineral.

Two Groups of Minerals Silicates –Contain oxygen and silicon –Makes up more than 90% of Earth’s crust Non Silicates –Do not contain oxygen and silicon

Uses of Minerals Metallic Minerals – good conductors of heat and electricity. –airplanes, cars, computers, electronic equip. Nonmetallic Minerals – good insulators of electricity. –roads, buildings, bridges, other structures Gemstones – Rare and colorful. Used in jewelry.
