The Student Athlete Experience

Answer the following Questions: ◦ What should I be doing now? ◦ What are the eligibility requirements? NCAA, NAIA, Junior College ◦ What resources are available?

Earn the best grades possible Take approved courses Register at www.eligibilitycenter.org at the beginning of your sophomore yearwww.eligibilitycenter.org If you fall behind, use summer school sessions before your senior year to catch up

Register to take the ACT, SAT or both and use the NCAA Eligibility Center code “9999” as a score recipient Double check to make sure you are taking the correct courses Request that your high school counselor send an official transcript to the NCAA Eligibility Center after completing your junior year

Take the ACT or SAT as many times as necessary Continue to take the correct courses Graduate on Time (Eight Semesters) Visit the “My Planner” page ◦ View eligibility status ◦ Check for any missing information or documents Request final amateurism certification beginning April 1 st (fall enrollees), Oct. 1 st (spring enrollees) After Graduation, ask your high school counselor to send your final transcript with proof of graduation to the NCAA Eligibility Center.

A course that qualifies for graduation in one or more of the following: English, Math, Science, Social Sciences, Foreign Language, Comparative Religion, or Philosophy Is considered four year college preparatory Is taught at or above the high school’s regular academic level Math courses at or above Algebra I Is taught by a qualified instructor as defined by the appropriate academic authority

Online courses Independent study Other similar courses Should be discussed with your high school counselor on an individual basis

Division I ◦ From the time you enter ninth grade, you have four years or eight semesters to complete your core course requirement. Core courses taken after the eighth semester will not count toward your NCAA academic eligibility requirements Division II ◦ You are permitted to use all core courses completed from your ninth grade year until the time you enroll full time at a college or university

Graduate High School on time Complete NCAA-approved courses Earn a minimum GPA in required core- courses Earn a required SAT or ACT sum score. (sliding scale)

Starting August 1, 2016 there are three possible academic outcomes: ◦ 1. Qualifier-Competition, athletics scholarship, and practice the first year ◦ 2. Academic Redshirt- athletics scholarship the first year, practice in first regular academic term, No competition the first year ◦ 3. Nonqualifier-No athletics scholarship, No practice or competition the first year.

Students must meet the following requirements to have “Qualifier” status: ◦ 16 core courses in the following areas: 4 years of English 3 years math at Algebra I or higher 2 years natural or physical science (one lab if offered) 1 year additional English, math, or natural/physical science 2 years social science 4 years additional from areas above or foreign language, philosophy or comparative religion Minimum GPA required: ◦ GPA of 2.3 in the 16 core courses

Sliding Scale (see handout) Core Course Progression ◦ Must complete 10 core courses before seventh semester of high school (senior year) ◦ 7 of the 10 core courses must be in the area of English, math, or science ◦ These 10 courses become “locked in” for the purpose of GPA calculation A repeat of any of the “locked in” courses will not be used if taken after the seventh semester begins

16 Core Courses (Same as Qualifier) Minimum GPA Required ◦ GPA of 2.000-2.299 Sliding Scale (see handout) Fail to meet the required 10 core courses prior to start of your seventh semester (senior year) ◦ You will be allowed to retake core courses in your seventh or eighth semester, which will be used in your academic certification for the purpose of meeting the academic redshirt requirements

You do not meet either set of previous requirements ◦ Cannot receive an athletic scholarship ◦ Cannot practice or compete for first year

Students must meet the following requirements to have “Qualifier” status: ◦ 16 Core Courses (Different than Division I) 3 years of English 2 years math at Algebra I or higher 2 years of natural/physical science (1 year of lab if offered) 3 years additional English, math or natural/physical science 2 years social science 4 years additional courses from any area above, foreign language, comparative religion, or philosophy.

Graduate High School Required GPA ◦ 2.0 or better in core courses Required ACT/SAT ◦ Earn a combined SAT sum score of 820 or an ACT sum score of 68 Partial Qualifier-(Receive Scholarship/Practice) ◦ Graduate High School ◦ Meet GPA or ACT/SAT requirement (not both)

Complete the require 16 core courses (Same) Earn a minimum GPA of 2.200 or better in core courses Earn a minimum SAT or ACT score that matches the full qualifier sliding scale (see handout)

Complete the required 16 core courses Earn a minimum GPA of 2.000 with the corresponding SAT or ACT test score on the partial qualifier sliding scale

Remember to enter the “9999” code when registering ◦ This requests for your official test score to be sent directly to the NCAA Eligibility Center Taking the test multiple times ◦ Your best test scores will be used

Unlike Division I and II, there is no uniform set of eligibility requirements for Division III Eligibility for admission, financial aid (not athletic scholarship), practice and competition is determined by the college or university The NCAA Eligibility Center does not perform certification for Division III college-bound student athletes

Graduate High School Meet two out of three requirements: ◦ Achieve a minimum of 18 on the ACT or 860 on the SAT (Critical Reading and Math only) ◦ Achieve a minimum overall high school GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale ◦ Graduate in the top half of your high school class

Graduate High School Meet admission requirements for specific school

After six semester of high school (Junior year) Division I, II, and NAIA All have specific requirements to earn early “qualifier” status (see your counselor)
