Excretory System
2
Excretory System Function: eliminate nonsolid wastes
Skin: releases excess salts and water Lungs: removes excess CO2 and water Kidneys: filters the blood to eliminate waste
3
The Kidneys Basic Functions: Remove waste from the blood
Maintain fluid balance Release hormones for bones, producing RBCs, and control blood pressure
4
Inside the Kidneys Waste-blood enters the kidney
1) Filtration: water, amino acids, salts, glucose, electrolytes pushed out of the capillaries…into the kidneys
5
Inside the Kidneys 2) Reabsorption of materials
Most filtered materials reabsorbed into capillaries Prevents loss of nutrients
6
Inside the Kidneys 3) Excretion of materials
Waste materials excreted in urine Waste flows through the ureter into the bladder Exits through the urethra
8
Kidney Failure Transplant Dialysis
Main cause: High blood pressure & diabetes Excess sugar prevents proper filtering Transplants from siblings most successful Similar tissue types Anti-rejection meds taken for life Dialysis Machine to filter blood Waste diffuses into the machine Clean blood returns to patient 3-4 days/week
