6 Imogen Cunningham was born in Portland, Oregon on April 12, 1883

7 Before her images of flowers and plants, she was considered a ‘pictoral’ photographer as in Dream 1910.

8 EDUCATION Cunningham studied chemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle. She was advised by her professor that she should have a scientific background if she wanted to be a photographer.

9 She paid her expenses by working for her chemistry professor. She also made slides for the botanists.

11 More education Cunningham also studied photographic chemistry in Dresden, Germany She bought her first camera from a mail-order catalog.

12 “Modern Processes of Photography.” This was the title of Cunninham’s Thesis when she graduated from the University of Washington….. …with a degree in CHEMISTRY!

13 “Soft-focus”, Pictorial photography:

14 Other accomplishments: 1913 Imogen Cunningham published "Photography as a Profession for Women,” This was an article encouraging women to take up photography as a career. 1914 Her first one-person exhibition was held at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences In which she exhibited soft-focus Pictorialist studies of figures in the landscape.

16 FAMILY 1915 Imogen Cunningham married Seattle artist, Roi Partridge. Around that time, their son, Gryffyd, was born. She closed her studio and moved with Roi to California where their twin sons, Rondal and Padraic, were born.

17 Still photographing Though very busy with three young sons, Cunningham continued in photography. Her photography was largely confined to photographing her children and the plants in her garden.

18 PIONEER Opened a portrait studio in Seattle in 1910 The only member of Society of Seattle Artists who was a photographer. 1932 As an original member of Group f.64 exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum.

19 GROUP f.64 Cunningham was an original member of this famous group of photographers.
