What neighborhood am I in? Silly questions worth answering Is it Unicast or Multicast? Is it Streams or packets (TCP/UDP)? How big a road do you need (Bandwidth)? – can’t land a 747 in your backyard Who else is on the road? – don’t punish your neighbors! – the NOC is your friend! (really!)
3
What’s different about Multicast? What if your home telephone were multicast instead of unicast? Anyone old enough to remember when your home phone was a “party line”? Anyone old enough to remember TV before the cable TV & satellite TV? –“Broadcast” to local area – cable/satellite TV kind of like “multicast”, lets you tune to a non-local “broadcast” channel The language, acronyms, the protocols IGMP (v1, v2, v3) PIM, MSDP, RP, BSR You can either become a network engineer or …

1 st step: is there any hope? See if you’re on a multicast-capable network http://detective.internet2.eduhttp://dast.nlanr.net/Projects/Beacon/ If Multicast Capable: Yes – things will likely work just fine … except for when they don’t (test for more than 5 minutes!)
5
2 nd step: Will it work from here to there? Make sure you can get there without multicast Detective – E2E bandwidth test Use old-fashion tools: ping, traceroute, ftp Try a simple multicast application Vic, rat, sdr - http://www.openmash.org/http://www.openmash.org/ Listen to some multicast stream - http://multicast.internet2.edu/wg-multicast- sources.shtml http://multicast.internet2.edu/wg-multicast- sources.shtml Peek at your network ethereal - http://www.ethereal.com/http://www.ethereal.com/ If all this works for you – test your application!
6
3 rd step: What can I do if nothing works? Check out your own neighborhood Can I run “vic” between 2 users in my office? in my building? Across my campus? Share your discoveries with your NOC If you live in a nice neighborhood, check out some other neighborhoods … Share your discoveries with your NOC Encourage them to share this with your uplink ISP If you live in a bad neighborhood … Find a friend in a good neighborhood (rcBridge)rcBridge
7
4 th step: be nice! Check your wireless connection Do “tiny” test, if multicast works, please inform your NOC – don’t do this intentionally Don’t suck the pipe dry! Find out how the size of your “pipe” Find out required bandwidth for application – http://www.ethereal.com/ http://www.ethereal.com/ – http://www.etherpeek.com/products/etherpeek_nxhttp://www.etherpeek.com/products/etherpeek_nx
