If you’d like to contribute to the board I started, you are welcome to do so – simply me that you’d like an invitation. North Dakota: Growth and Development: Birth-3: 3-5: CSLP: Manual crafts: Leach:

Discussion Topics Promotion Registration Programming Evaluation
Progress – Will you count minutes, pages, or books? There are pros and cons to each. Advertising is key – even regular library users won’t participate if they don’t know about the program! Print bookmarks, put up a display, decorate. Advertise outside the library – people who are not regular library users the rest of the year may participate during the summer. Ask businesses to display posters. If they are donating, have a special “We support summer reading” sign. Use community bulletin boards, marquees, etc. Schools are crucial – if you can’t make a classroom visit, see if they will send home flyers. There are school visit ideas in the manual. Put it in the paper, put it on Facebook, on your website. There are special graphics on the disc for online promotions. Reach out to target groups – scouts, day cares, camps, homeschoolers, sports teams, churches. PSAs – see if you can get local radio/cable access to play them; NDSL also distributes them statewide Registration – How will you track participants? Will they be able to register at any time? How do you track goals? Write it down – you will not remember the details of this year next year. Share data with the community – library board, sponsors, etc. Personalize it. You don’t have to give names, but share stories about the difference it made, as well as statistics.

Kinetic/Physical Literacy
Physical literacy is the development of fundamental movement skills that permit a person to move with confidence and control in a wide range of actions — such as throwing, skipping or balancing — and environments, like on snow, grass, water, in the air or on ice. Movement, especially rhythmic activity, creates neural connections across multiple pathways in the brain. It teaches children self-discipline and stress-management. The library can be an alternative to organized sports but still encourage movement.

Bullying Prevention through Exercise
Increases self-confidence, making a child less vulnerable to being picked on in the first place and more likely to stand up for herself and report the bullying, if it does happen Lowers suicide attempts and ideation in teens by 23 percent Releases the pent-up anger and shame that often leads children to be bullies in the first place In a group, it promotes friendships and bonding through shared experience “Recent studies have shown that involving children in exercise programs significantly increases a child's resilience to bullying.”
