Federalists Plan to Secede ■The Louisiana Purchase troubled Federalists because they thought Westward Expansion would weaken New England’s political and economic power. –Federalists in Massachusetts plotted to secede, or withdraw from the Union and become the “Northern Confederacy.” ■Alexander Hamilton was concerned about these rumors---He had never trusted Aaron Burr who was one of the leaders of this movement. –When Hamilton accused Burr of this, it hurt him politically. Angry with Hamilton, Burr Challenged him to a duel. Aaron Burr Alexander Hamilton

The Duel of Hamilton and Burr ■Hamilton hated dueling. It was illegal but popular among upper-class America. –Hamilton pledged not to shoot. Burr did not. ■Burr shot Hamilton—he was seriously wounded and died the next day. ■Crazy fact----Burr fled to avoid arrest. He was never tried for Hamilton’s death and returned to Washington DC to complete his term as vice president.

American Ships on the High Seas ■Piracy on the seas was a huge problem in the early 1800s. ■The US went to a small war with Tripoli because Jefferson did not want to pay tribute to prevent piracy of American ships. ■Jefferson also faced shipping problems after he was reelected in 1804. –France and Britain were at war and neither of them wanted the US trading with their enemy. –They began blocking American ships. ■Jefferson did not want to go to war over this— so he asked congress to pass the Embargo Act of 1807. This stated that the US would not trade with any other countries.

Embargo Act of 1807 and the end of Jefferson’s presidency ■This policy failed and congress stopped it in 1809. ■Jefferson did not run for a 3 rd term--- Federalists hoped people would be angry about the Embargo Act and wouldn’t elect another democratic-republican. ■However, James Madison will easily win election in 1808.

War at Home and Abroad ■James Madison faced 3 big problems when he came into office: 1.The economy was bad because of the embargo. 2.Britain kept stopping American ships. 3.Tension is growing in the West with Native Americans.

Heading for War ■Many young Republicans wanted Madison to be more aggressive with Britain. They wanted to go to war. They were called War Hawks. –The Federalists in the Northeast were against the war. ■Eventually there will be 3 major causes that lead to war:
