A look at our nearest neighbor in Space! The Moon

What is the Moon? A natural satellite (something that orbits a planet) One of more than 96 moons in our Solar System –For example, Jupiter has 63 moons! Planet Earth only has one moon, so we call it THE Moon.

What is the only object in space man has traveled to and landed on? What was the 1 st object of space exploration? Think About This…

The Earth’s Moon = only object in our solar system to be visited by humans! Write In Notebook..

8 phases of the moon. It takes about 29 days for all 8 phases Write In Notebook..

It’s Just a Phase Moonlight is reflected sunlight Half the moon’s surface is always reflecting light From Earth we see different amounts of the Moon’s lit surface The amount seen is called a “phase”

The moon rotates 1 time in 29 days! The moon revolves around Earth 1 time in 29 days! Why we always see the same side of the Moon! (we never see the back side of the moon) Did you know?

Waxing: lit portion of moon increasing (think waxing = expanding) Write In Notebook..

Right Light, Waxing WAXING: When we start to see MORE of the lit side of the moon The moon starts to look “bigger” from the right side

Waning: lit portion of moon decreasing Write In Notebook…

Left Lit, Waning WANING: When we start to see LESS of the lit side of the moon When the lit portion of the moon starts to look “smaller”

FULL QUARTER CRESCENT GIBBOUS MOON’S FOUR MAIN SHAPES WRITE THIS IN YOUR NOTEBOOK

Follow along 1: Fold your paper Hamburger style 2: Fold paper in so your “door’s close” 3. Fold hamburger 4. Fold hamburger 5. Open up and you should have 8 individual boxes 6. Number your boxes: follow teacher example Foldable of Moon Phases

Waxing Crescent –Phase 2 A small part (less than 1/2) of the moon is lit up at this point. lit part is slowly getting bigger. 0

First Quarter – Phase 3 One half of the moon is lit up by the sun at this point. lit part is slowly getting bigger.

Waning Gibbous – Phase 6 Nearly all the moon is lit up lit part of the moon getting smaller.

Last Quarter – Phase 7 Half of the moon is lit up by the sun. lit part of moon getting smaller.

Waning Crescent – Phase 8 A small part of the moon is lit up Lit part getting smaller til we can no longer see it (New Moon Again!) The cycle keeps repeating
