2. The Situation A volcano in Hawaii is active and is having eruptions. This is why we were hired, to find out whether they should evacuate the island, or if they should study and find out when the next eruption will happen. So that they can take precautions and figure out the next move.

3. The Problem Should the people of Hawaii, especially those living near the volcano Kilauea, evacuate the area, or should they stay put, and wait and see what happens?

5. Characteristics of the Volcano Kilauea is a shield volcano. It has divergent boundaries. Kilauea is located in Hawaii. The climate in kilauea is generally warm, with little precipitation. Surrounding the volcano, is a tropical rainforest. Other types of land formations of the volcano are rainforest, craters, and volcanic rock.

Information We Know -Hawaii is made up completely of volcanoes. -It is located on the Big Island of Hawaii, on the southeastern most part. -It is the youngest volcano on Hawaii. -Its most recent eruption is continuous since January 3, 1983. -Its oldest dated rocks are 23,000 yrs. old. -The estimated age of its first eruption is 300,000 to 600,000 yrs. ago. -In 2004 there was an estimated population of 1,262,840 people in Hawaii.

8. Risk Analysis the volcano erupts 500 times every 200 yrs. It would cost $152.5 million per person!!!!!!!

10. Possible Solutions People could stay and see what happens, but everyone should be informed of the situation. Tourists should evacuate first, then the citizens. People can choose for themselves whether or not to evacuate, but we could persuade them to leave because their lives may possibly be at risk. The volcano might not erupt, so if everyone were to evacuate, it would waste a lot of time and money.

11. The Solution The tourists should be evacuated first, and then the citizens of Hawaii. The tourists are higher priority because they don’t live in Hawaii, so they need to get back home safely. the citizens live there so they know what to do and what to expect.
