The Components of Music Theater In order for a play to be considered a musical it must contain three components Let’s Brainstorm….What are 3 things all musicals have? They all have:

Acting (speaking): ◦ Comedy ◦ Dramatic ◦ Pantomime ◦ Improvasation ◦ Shakespearean Singing: ◦ Classical ◦ Pop ◦ Operatic Dancing: ◦ Ballet ◦ Tap ◦ Jazz ◦ Modern ◦ Stomp ◦ Contemporary

What are they Called? When a performer possesses all three of these, the show business term for them is: A Triple Threat

When a story possesses all three of these elements, then it can be considered a musical

Types of Songs There are 4 more types of songs that can appear in a musical: The first type of songs is a Trunk Song: ◦ A Trunk Song is a song written for one Musical, cut out from it, then used in a different musical. Sometimes it’s just a small theme, sometimes it’s a whole song. ◦ Andrew Lloyd Webber uses this type of song all the time Examples: ◦ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsKLXFlhk7s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsKLXFlhk7s ◦ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ya_suwmG-zM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ya_suwmG-zM ◦ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGr8f4KGbBs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGr8f4KGbBs

Show Stopper: Is a song when performed correctly, will stop the show with Thunderous Applause! ◦ Example:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DUXVAg7oWg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DUXVAg7oWg

“In One” A number done in front of the curtain so the set can be changed behind it. ◦ Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MzCZzV ZZOA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MzCZzV ZZOA These numbers are not as common as the rest

Act 1/Act 2 Finale Act 1 Finale will end the first act so the audience can take a break, or intermission. The characters are usually at their lowest point so the audience will come back to see the resolution: ◦ Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IddP8AAIGTQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IddP8AAIGTQ The Act 2 Finale ends the entire show where the plot has reached it’s resolution either comedicly or tragically. All problems are solved through this number. ◦ Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nXfDMWGfa8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nXfDMWGfa8

In Conclusion Each song is unique in it’s own form, but all of them will move the story forward and give the audience precious information about the plot, characters, conflicts, and resolutions. The only difference is that it is done through song and dance (musically) rather than through speech.
