Opportunities for ECR in the EU EU funding (H2020) Member States funding Private funding The EU is highly heterogeneous (4.3 M Km2, 500+ M people + AC) Many opportunities scattered across the Union 12,000+ scholarships, grants, loans and other funding options worth 27+ billion Euros We can distinguish three categories Most prestigious: EU funding Most attractive? Depends! On your research objectives On your network On the stage of your career development On where you want to live...

EU funding scheme – Horizon 2020 Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020)

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Call is for institutions They may hire postdocs Call is for institutions They may hire postdocs Call is for institutions They may hire postdocs

MSCA – Individual Fellowships (IF) Objective enhance the creative and innovative potential of experienced researchers provide opportunities to acquire new knowledge, work on research projects in a European context or outside Europe, resume a career or return to Europe Scope Individual, trans-national fellowships awarded to the best or most promising researchers European Fellowships or Global Fellowships Expected Impact release the full potential of researchers and to catalyse significant development in their careers in both the academic and non-academic sectors strengthen the contact network of the researcher and the host organisation Beneficiary: host organization (they do all the paperwork and submit). De facto, MSCA tend to be divided in two stages: screening (host) & assessment by EC

MSCA – IF: Global and European

MSCA – IF: Funding An Australian researcher without family obligations who obtained her PhD on 15 June 2014 applies jointly with a university in Germany for a 24-month fellowship. The budget calculation would be like this: Total duration= 24 months (person-months) Country of the host organization = Germany 1. Living allowance =€ 4,650 x 24 x DE Country Correction Coefficient (CCC) =€ 4,650 x 24 x 98.8% = € 110,260.80 2. Mobility allowance =€ 600 x 24=€ 14,400 3. Family allowance = N/A 4. Research, training and networking costs =€ 800 x 24=€ 19,200 5. Management and indirect costs =€ 650 x 24=€ 15,600 Maximum EU contribution =€ 110,260.80 + 14,400 + 19,200 + 15,600 = € 159,460.80

MSCA – IF: Evaluation criteria 50% 30% 20%

Looking forward: European Research Council Grants

Member States (MS) funding As complex and heterogeneous as Europe They may be as competitive as MSCA-IF (e.g. Dutch - Veni)…Veni … or not quite (e.g. Spanish) A few programmes restricted to nationals of the MS (!) Typically announced in Euraxess - http://ec.europa.eu/euraxess/http://ec.europa.eu/euraxess/

Private funding Most can be tracked herehere Main fellowships announced in Euraxess as well, including: Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers AXA Post-Doctoral Fellowship

25 Post-Doctoral Fellowships yearly €130,000 for a duration of 24 months (can be reduced to 18 in some MS, same funding). Only selected institutions can apply Three stages: 1) Institutions put forward nominees; 2) Short proposal; 3) Long proposal (with rebuttal)
