Preparing for the Socratic Seminar 1.Read the required text 2.Highlight/annotate key ideas from the text. 3.Formulate the appropriate DOK level questions according to assignment guidelines. 4.Make text-based connections: text-text text-world text-self

Role of Leader 1.Moderate discussion. 2.Help participants rephrase questions for clarity. 3.Invite others into discussion 4.Encourage participants to use the text to support their responses.

During Socratic Seminar Inner Participate Refer to text to support your response Take turns speaking instead of raising hand Discuss text, not other’s opinions Speak clearly/Listen carefully Use academic language (communication registers) Outer Focus on observation partner Note partner’s participation/behavior on observation sheet Make notes of responses you would like to make Do not get distracted by people around you
