Tennessee SPI Objective: Interpret and translate data into a table, graph, or diagram. Notes Essential Questions 1 ) What are some effective strategies to help me understand and correctly interpret data from tables, charts, and graphs? 2) What are the differences and specific purposes of a table, circle graph, line graph, and a bar graph? Check for Understanding Use evidence from a dataset to determine cause and effect relationships in order explain a phenomenon. SPI 0807.Inq.3: Interpret Data Date

SPI 0807.Inq.3: Interpret Data Notes Data Interpretation in 4 Steps Detailed Version Science Step 1: Carefully examine the table, graph, or diagram. Step 2: Look for patterns/trends in the way the data is organized and displayed. Step 3: Read the question. Determine specifically what it is asking. Also read the answer choices. Step 4: Again examine the visual to find the answer. Note: often the answer will not be obvious, but it can be determined by following the patterns/trends of the displayed data. Data Interpretation in 4 Steps (Summarized Version) Step 1: Carefully examine it. Step 2: Look for patterns/trends. Step 3: Determine what the question is asking, & read the choices. Step 4: Find the answer (may be in the pattern/trend). Copy this down!

(1) Closely examine the table, graph, or diagram. 12 months City Y Avg Temp Avg monthly temp (in Celsius) Data Interpretation in 4 Steps City X Avg Temp What do you notice when you examine this table? Task: Write down three facts about this table.

(2) Look for patterns in the way the data is organized and displayed. Data Interpretation in 4 Steps What patterns do you see with this data? Task: Write down one pattern that you see. City X-Lowest temps (coldest) are Dec, Jan and Feb January February December City Y-Lowest temps (coldest) are also Dec, Jan and Feb

(2) Look for patterns in the way the data is organized and displayed. Data Interpretation in 4 Steps What other patterns do you see with this data? June, July, and Aug are the highest temps (hottest) for both cities June July August

(2) Look for patterns in the way the data is organized and displayed. Data Interpretation in 4 Steps What other patterns do you see with this data? June July August For both cities the lowest temps happen in the coldest winter months. For both cities the highest temps happen in the summer months. Also for both cities moderate temps occur in spring and fall. Spring Fall January February December

(2) Look for patterns in the way the data is organized and displayed. Data Interpretation in 4 Steps Is there anything else that you notice about this data? Hint: Look at the temps of these two cities. Which city is warmer? City Y is warmer City X is cooler

(3) Read the question and determine specifically what it is asking. Data Interpretation in 4 Steps  Also carefully read the answer choices.

(4) Find the answer (may be in the pattern/trend). Data Interpretation in 4 Steps There is nothing in the table about wind speed. So letter A probably is not the right answer.

(4) Find the answer (may be in the pattern/trend). Data Interpretation in 4 Steps There is nothing in the table about humidity. So letter B probably is not the right answer.

(4) Find the answer (may be in the pattern/trend). Data Interpretation in 4 Steps There is nothing in the table about rainfall. So letter D probably is not the right answer.

(4) Find the answer (may be in the pattern/trend). Data Interpretation in 4 Steps Cities on the equator are closer to the sun, so these cities are generally hotter than cities in other areas of our planet. So letter C is the correct answer.  City X is generally colder than City Y, so it is logical to assume that City X is further from the equator.

 (3) Read over the question and determine specifically what it is asking Cities on the equator are closer to the sun, so these cities are generally hotter than cities in other areas of our planet So letter C is the correct answer. City X is generally colder than City Y, so it is logical to assume that City X is further from the equator

Questions Science SPI 0807.Inq.3: Interpret Data Step 1: Carefully examine it. Step 3: Determine what the question is asking, & read the choices. Step 4: Find the answer (may be in the pattern/trend). Step 2: Look for patterns/trends.

Questions Science SPI 0807.Inq.3: Interpret Data Step 1: Carefully examine it. Step 3: Determine what the question is asking, & read the choices. Step 4: Find the answer (may be in the pattern/trend). Step 2: Look for patterns/trends.

Questions Science SPI 0807.Inq.3: Interpret Data Step 1: Carefully examine it. Step 3: Determine what the question is asking, & read the choices. Step 4: Find the answer (may be in the pattern/trend). Step 2: Look for patterns/trends.
