Matter Definition: Anything that takes up space (volume) and has mass (grams)

States of Matter 1.Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma

What makes a phase a phase? 1. What phase a substance is in is determined by the amount of energy the particles have. a.Solid particles have less energy b.Plasma particles have the most energy

Solids 1.Definite volume 2.Definite mass 3.Particles vibrate in place a.Not enough energy for particles to change positions

Types of Solids 1.Crystalline Solids a.Particles arranged in a rigid repeating pattern b.Actually forms a shape c.Examples 1.Salt, Sugar, Diamonds, Snow

Types of Solids 2. Amorphous Solid a.Particles are put together randomly. b.No pattern c.Do Not keep their shapes d.Examples: Clay, Glass, Rubber, Plastic

Liquids 1.No definite shape 2.Definite volume 3.Particles have more energy a.Move around and switch positions 4.Viscosity a.How much the particles of a liquid stick to each other. 1.Water molecules= low viscosity 2.Molasses or syrup= high viscosity

Liquids 5. Surface Tension a.A thin film on the surface of the water b.The molecules are attracted to each other c.The reason for a belly smacker 1.Divers use “bubblers” to break up surface tension when they are diving d.After a certain height falling into water is the same as falling onto concert because of surface tension

Gas 1.No definite shape 2.No definite volume a.Example, spraying perfume in a room, or smelling what’s cooking for dinner BEFORE you get to the kitchen 3.Particles have the most energy. 4.Particles move apart as far as they can

Plasma 1.Most abundant form of matter in the universe a.Stars are made from it 2.Most energy of all forms of matter 3.Must be contained in a magnetic bottle on Earth a.Too much energy to keep it contained any other way
