3 Objectives 1. Analyze Shakespearean language for connotation and denotation of phrases. 2. Review verbs and verb phrases. 3. Determine the connotative meaning of words as they are used in a text; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone. Homework: Supplies

5 Warm up Instructions: Copy the sentences onto warm up sheet. Underline the subject 1x verb 2x(verb phrase is considered a verb) 1. I've done it again. 2. You aren't going with us. 3. She's staying to tend the kids.

8 Verb Phrase Verb phrase—consists of a main verb preceded by at least one helping verb (auxiliary verb) Besides all forms of the verb be, helping verbs include

11 Other Helping Verbs: can could should maymust would might shall will

12 Notice how helping verbs work together with main verbs to make a complete verb phrase.

13 EXAMPLE: is leaving may become might have remained had seemed should move might have thought shall be going could jump does sing

14 Sometimes the parts of a verb phrase are interrupted by other parts of speech.

15 Did you hear President Bush’s speech? Has the D.J. played the new CD for you?

16 EXAMPLE: She had always been thinking of her future. We could never have moved the bleachers.

17 NOTE: The word not is always an adverb. It is never part of a helping verb, even when it is joined to a verb as the contraction –n’t.
