5. Mental vs. written methods When working on calculations with children, we always encourage them to think about which is more important before solving the calculation they have been given: doing the calculation mentally or writing the calculation down.

7. Children attempting to use formal written methods without a secure understanding of the numbers they are working with will try to remember rules, which may result in mistakes. The understanding of what they are doing and why (reasoning) they are doing it is crucial in order for them to make progress.
