Chapter 1 By Paul Acquaviva, Brian Bulger, Owen Brady, Brendan Corso and Evan Conte

Characters Kira is the main protagonist, she has a deformed leg, and she has just lost her mom. Christopher-Kira’s dad, died in a hunt because of beasts Matt-from the fen, where they talk in their own way. What is the relationship between people’s names and ages? State which 4 are important to community and explain why: ●cott ●tykes ●neighbors ●fens ●Field of Leaving ●age By: Brendan Corso

Setting Gathering Blue takes place in a futuristic society. Some places and symbols in the society that play an important role to Kira’s story are: ●The Field Of Leaving The place where the deceased are put. (Like a graveyard) ●The Water Well The water well shows that the setting is very simple and Kira’s community seems to not have the advantages (like water bottles) that we have today. ●Kira’s Cott Even though it was burned in the fire, Kira and her mother’s cott appeared in a flashback to when her mother was still alive. This cott represents Kira and her mother’s bond which is now gone along with the cott. ●The Weaving Shed Although it does not make an appearance, the weaving shed is still mentioned in the novel. This is the only place that Kira can contribute to because of her disability, making this a very important place for Kira.

Setting (Continued) First Impression Of The Society As of right now, the society that Kira lives in is very plain and simple. “Tussling, the toddlers slapped and kicked at each other, grabbing toy sticks…” (Lowry 8) This quote shows that little children do not play with actual toys like the present day children do, which insinuates that Kira’s society is more simple than ours. Since this book takes place in a futuristic setting, I would have expected their society to take a step forward in a technological standpoint, but it seems like they have taken one, if not multiple steps back. 6 Progressed or Regressed? P or R ●In the story, there is weaving stations, now you go to a store. R ●In the story, they grow and slaughter for food, now we have fast food restaurants. R ●The community has no technology. R ●They use a well instead of a faucet. R By:Evan Conte

Quotes “As for Kira she had no family now. Nor any home,” (Lowry 2) This is an important quote because it shows that Kira is all alone and has nothing. Her house got burnt down and she has no family to live and rebuild with. “My mother’s spirit has gone,” (Lowry 10) This quote tells you that the people of the community do not say things the way people in our time do. They are also are different in that the tykes are the names for children. By: Brian Bulger
