Measurement

International System of Units (SI) Modern version of metric system Based on a decimal system which uses # 10 as base unit Only three nations have not officially adopted the International System of Units as their primary system of measurement: Burma, Liberia, and the United States.

King Henry Died Monday Drinking Chocolate Milk Kilo Hecto Deca Meter Deci Centi Milli Conversions between metric units is as easy as dividing or multiplying by 10 or simply sliding the decimal place! Base units: Length – meter Volume – liter Mass – gram

Conversion Hints Kilo Hecto Deca Meter Deci Centi Milli Smaller to Larger Units DDivide by unit of 10 OR MMove decimal correct # of times to the LEFT EExample: 10 mm = ? cm 10 mm /10 = 1 cm OR 10 mm = 1 cm Larger to Smaller Units MMultiply by unit of 10 OR MMove decimal correct # of times to the RIGHT EExample:.20 dm = ? mm.20 dm * 100 = 20mm OR.20 dm = 20 mm

Weight: measurement of the force of gravity on an object Measured in pounds (lbs) Can change depending on the force of gravity in the area  Example: If you move to the moon, you’ll lose a few pounds because there is less gravity.

Mass: how much matter is in something Depends on the number and kinds of atoms that make up an object NEVER changes Measured by using a balance in grams (g) Formula: mass equals the density multiplied by the volume M = DV

Volume: measure of how much space an object occupies  Liquid: measured in milliliters (ml) with graduated cylinders and beakers  Formula: volume equals the mass divided by the density V = M / D  Volume can also be calculated if given the dimensions of an object V = length x width x height

Density: measure of the amount of matter that occupies a particular space Measured in grams/milliliters (g/ml) or grams/cubic centimeter (g/cm 3 ) Note:1 ml = 1 cm 3 Formula: density equals the mass divided by the volume D = M / V

Temperature: the amount of heat in something SI unit is Kelvin (K) Measured with a thermometer in Celsius (°C)  0°C (freezing) to 100°C (boiling) Convert to Fahrenheit (°F) or Kelvin (K) Human body temperature is 37°C

Temperature Conversion Formulas: 1.Fahrenheit & Kelvin F= 9/5(K - 273.15) + 32 K= [5/9 (F - 32)] + 273.15 2. Celsius & Kelvin C= K - 273.15 K= C + 273.15 3. Celsius & Fahrenheit C= 5/9(F - 32) F= 9/5(C) + 32

Time: the period between two events SI unit is the second (s) Formula: distance equals the rate multiplied by the time d = rate x time (s)
