STAGE I Survival

Characteristics Feelings of inadequacy and self doubt Feelings of overwhelming responsibility Strong need for acceptance

Needs Assurance that what they are feeling and experiencing is not unusual or wrong Specific, detailed, ongoing information about mechanics of the job they are expected to do Feedback from colleagues and administrators Assurance that they can, and will, survive

Appropriate Methods for Professional Development On-site training (in classroom) Trainer must be constantly and readily available Network with teachers teaching same age children Observe in another classroom Read very practical books Attend workshops on areas of concern Attend professional meeting to begin to identify with others in the same field

STAGE II CONSOLIDATION

Characteristics Feeling that he/she will “make it” Has more realistic expectations of children and interested in learning about their development Focus is on individual children and methods of classroom management

Needs Continued feedback and reassurance from administration Encouragement or empowerment to solve own problems Information about individual differences in children and behavior management techniques

Appropriate Methods for Professional Development Network with other teachers Observe other teachers working with children Read about specific problems Attend workshops by specialists dealing with particular concerns of teachers Attend professional meetings to exchange information and ideas

STAGE III RENEWAL

Needs Feedback and recognition from administrators Opportunities which encourage their growth as professionals Opportunities to function as team leaders and mentors for beginning teachers Exposure to innovation
