Advance Production: R & P Observational Documentary To Be and To Have -Être et Avoir’: France: Dir: Nicholas Philibert: 2002 To Be and To Have - Être et Avoir; -also the UK title -is a 2002 French documentary film, directed by Nicolas Philibert, about a small rural school which has one small class of mixed ages (from 4 to 12 years), with a dedicated teacher, Mr Lopez, who shows patience and respect for the children as we follow their story through a single school year. It was nominated as an "Out of Competition" film at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival and achieved commercial success earning 2 million at the cinema, an enormous amount for a documentary. As the star of Etre et Avoir, France's most successful documentary, Mr Lopez the teacher became a national hero.

Outcomes: Lesson 1 and 2 Must recognise and list features of ‘fly on the wall’ observational documentary. ( note taking grid on table) Most will identify and list some features and write down some examples from the film ( grid) Some will evaluate these features and examples in their essay ( finish for homework).

Outcomes: 3 All must read handout on legal issues raided by film, answer questions on worksheet and complete role play in class. ( worksheet on blog) Most will identify some legal issues regarding documentary ( role play) Some will include these issues in their essay ( finish for homework).
