To the Greeks, perfection was manifested in the physical form through young, strong, male body (problems?) The gods created men and thus sculpting these creations as they were (exactly) was a form of honoring and worshipping the gods. Over time, perfection meant capturing every detail. (see slides) Women, the young, and the old were not ideal perfection and thus were not sculpted as realistically. Women’s bodies were covered. Old men had young bodies. Famous sculptors were like rock stars/holy men Most sculptures do not survive today. They were destroyed because they were considered indecent.
