1 ATAMSBLAST DIGITAL AGENDA SAT PREP Marquez March 19, 2012— March 23, 2012 DO NOW: Tuesday: Study for Vocabulary Test Thursday: Legal Team Creation California Standards: (Achieve 3000) Reading 1.0, Reading 1.0.1, Reading 2.0 (Individual) Reading Demonstrate knowledge of eighteenth-, nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century foundational works of American literature, including how two or more texts from the same period treat similar themes or topics. (Dierect) Determine two or more themes or central ideas of a text and analyze their development over the course of the text, including how they interact and build on one another to produce a complex account; provide an objective summary of the text. (Mock Trials) Speaking Applications 2.2a Use exposition, narration, description, persuasion, or some combination of those to support the thesis. Listening and Speaking 1.6 Use logical, ethical, and emotional appeals that enhance a specific tone and purpose. Listening and Speaking 1.8 Use effective and interesting language, including: a. Informal expressions for effect b. Standard American English for clarity c. Technical language for specificity Essential Questions: What kind of writing strategies are there in using evidence in essays? What kind of vocabulary is most effective to persuade an audience? A jury? LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR STUDENTS: Given: The entire class… the learner will: Will learn effective writing techniques used in persuasive essays as well as how to use evidence to support their thesis. by: Participating in a mock trial inspired by the Roald Dahl’s ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’. Students will be grouped together by Collaborative Stations and will have one week to put together a case to either defend or prosecute Mary Maloney. from Issa Assessment: Mock Trial Arguments, writing assignments, graphic organizer(s), and vocabulary test.

2 Individual Instruction: Wednesday (or Friday) * Log onto Achieve3000 -Read the Article for Wednesday, March 21, 2012 -Complete Steps 1-5 -Be sure to respond to the Reading Connections after each paragraph (SUMMARIZE, GENERATE QUESTIONS, and SETTING THE PURPOSE). I WILL be checking to see if you’re keeping on task. Direct Instruction: Tuesday -SAT Vocabulary Test-(20 minutes) Match the word with its proper definition. (20 points) *Vocabulary Power #2 (15 minutes) *Sentence Thursday -Using Evidence in Writing One of the major issues with writing is the author’s ability to cite sources and use evidence to support their thesis. Since you will be acting as part of a legal team, you’ll need to know how to properly introduce evidence in your essays using proper grammar and punctuation. During lecture, you will see plenty of great examples of this as well as practice a number of techniques on your own. (50 minutes) Collaborative Station: Tuesday and Thursday, 3/6 & 3/8 Short Story Tuesday ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’ (30 min) Read the Story found on the link below: http://www.classicshorts.com/stories/lamb.html Today, you will read a story about murder written by the man who wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! Sounds a bit strange, but Roald Dahl did write this story about a woman who is pushed to her limits. Complete WORKSHEET: Found on Class Website filed under ‘Lamb to Slaughter worksheet’ Thursday 3/8/2012 Guilty or Not Guilty? You’ve read the story about Mrs. Maloney and now you will put a case together to either defend her actions or bring her to justice. You and your legal team will be asked to either defend or prosecute Mary Maloney in the Court of 305. You will use evidence from the story, as well as psychological records and experts, to defend our case. You will present your case to the judge (that’s me) next week on Friday.
