3 Learning Objectives When you have completed this session you will be able to: Explain the role of the leader in setting the tone of the work environment Identify the necessary factors which motivate others to follow a leader Explain the importance of effective communication with teams and work units

4 Exercise 1- The Age of AIDS 1. How many leaders did you observe? 2. What was their style? 3. What were their attributes? 4. What was unique about each? 5. What did they have in common

5 What Do You Expect of a Leader? Cooperative Dependable Supportive Forward-looking Competent Honest Ambitious Independent Courageous Decisive Inspiring Respectful Bold

6 Exercise 2- Traits of Leaders 1. Identify leaders you know & admire 2. How did they behave?

7 Exercise 3- Common Leader Characteristics 1. Check the 5 traits which are most important for an outstanding leader. 2. Use the empty boxes if you think of others that are more important. 3. Place a colored dot on the flipchart next to the 5 behaviors you identified. 4. Note the group’s top 5 behaviors.

11 Motivation Types Affiliation Influence Are concerned with being liked and perceived as good people. Help and support others. Smooth out tensions in meetings. Seek opportunities to interact with individuals and groups. Work easily with others. Avoid confrontations.
