S. Colafranceschi - Ischia 2009 - CMS RPC Italia3 OBJECTIVES AND STATUS Previous runs in 2007 showed HF production, traces of filter materials in gas, inefficient regeneration procedure http://www.lnf.infn.it/sis/preprint/pdf/getfile.php?filename=LNF-08-33(IR).pdf Goal of CYCLE2 started in September 2008: 1.Confirm currents increase is only in TOP (upstream) gaps and not in DOWN (downstream) gaps 2.Measure lifetime of filters with unused material 3.Observe currents increase - correlate with presence of contaminants in gas - identify contaminant in gas Status Now: We have observed an increase of currents due to the closed loop effect in the TOP gaps only Using unused materials the purifiers lifetime is not 1 month but more than 6 months! Gas analysis performed, now analyzing data, results very soon

S. Colafranceschi - Ischia 2009 - CMS RPC Italia4 ISR setup reminder Closed Loop (CL) system at ISR, experimental area, for testing performance of CMS gas recirculation system, purifiers and identification of contaminants ISR TEST is equipped and monitored: - GasChromatograph, F- sensors, Temperature/Humidity/Pressure monitoring, mixer and gas flow monitoring - Since September 08 we carry on several tests on this system and we collected large amount of data and material, ready to be analyzed

S. Colafranceschi - Ischia 2009 - CMS RPC Italia5 ISR the Environment
6
S. Colafranceschi - Ischia 2009 - CMS RPC Italia6 ISR the Environment A Big effort, to maintain the environment costant inside the HUT at 20’C, 40% Relative Humidity Temperature (‘C) Relative Humidity (%) time
7
S. Colafranceschi - Ischia 2009 - CMS RPC Italia7 ISR the “closed loop” effect AIR CONTAMINATION 1 September 2008 run started with unused material 15/7/09 Removing used filters scala OPEN LOOP TOP GAP, CH8 BOTTOM GAP, CH9 - The closed loop effect is effective only on the TOP gap, the BOTTOM gap doesn’t feel this effect. - The chamber in open loop mode is stable, we can consider this chamber a reference for the “closed loop effect” TOP GAP, CH1 BOTTOM GAP, CH2 uA time CLOSED LOOP
8
S. Colafranceschi - Ischia 2009 - CMS RPC Italia8 Safety value Gas mixture is under control AIR CONTAMINATION The current increasing is not due to the air, we keep under control this value purging freon bottles and we daily monitor the gas mixture online with the GC
9
S. Colafranceschi - Ischia 2009 - CMS RPC Italia9 ISR 08-09 Removing ohmic current Default operating voltage Fitting the linear part, up to 6kV Ohmic contribution to the current Total current Since we have performed HV scan every day, with linear fit in the range 0- I(ohmMax), with I(ohmMax)=6kV, we are able to identify just the signal current at 9.2kV, removing the ohmic contribution. In progress check for I(ohmMax)=3,4,5kV. HV scan CH1 10/08/2009
10
S. Colafranceschi - Ischia 2009 - CMS RPC Italia10 ISR 09 Running without filters GC failure Closed loop Used filters Filters removed Gas system failure The air contamination increased during the period without purifiers. USED FILTERS ARE STILL CAPABLE TO FILTER OUT AIR. Closed loop Unused filters To be checked
11
S. Colafranceschi - Ischia 2009 - CMS RPC Italia11 Chemical Analysis – setup remind We collected bottles (ready to be analyzed) flown during period with high currents We expect to find pollutants inside flasks and on the pre-filters

S. Colafranceschi - Ischia 2009 - CMS RPC Italia13 Conclusions from ISR and…next period WHAT WE UNDERSTOOD Filters performance, using unused materials, is not only one month but more than 6 months. All the TOP gaps show an increased current, these gaps are exposed to “dirty gas mixture” while the gap BOTTOM receive the “purified” gas mixture from the TOP gap. WHAT WE ARE GOING TO UNDERSTAND Analyze ohmic and signal currents increase (bakelite and/or gas ?) The chemical analysis will investigate the nature of the contaminants, the reason why of the increased currents Now currents are decreasing back to the reference value OBJECTIVES OF FINAL CYCLE3 AT ISR Use regenerated filters and confirm the reduced filter lifetime
