1916 Battles: Verdun Lesson starter: - copy the box below: There were many important battles during World War One. Two of the notable ones of 1916 were the Battles of Verdun and The Somme. The Battle of Verdun was fought between the French and German forces and led to hundreds of thousands of deaths.

Your Task… Using pages 42-43 of the textbook, carry out research about Verdun You will work in groups On flipchart paper, create a mind-map about the battle including the following…

Think about the following… WHO was the battle between? WHERE did it occur? WHAT happened during the battle? WHAT was the outcome of the battle? WHY was this battle different from any previous battle?

Your Task In groups, you will teach a lesson to the rest of your class. Using only flipchart paper, pens and a textbook you will research a lesson about the Battle of Verdun Each group will have a 4-5 minute slot on the computer if they wish to use it for research Your lesson should last 2 – 4 minutes and you should involve your pupils in the lesson You may use paper, books, the board, actors etc to teach your lesson At the end, your teacher will decide which group taught the best lesson
