1 “No one would choose to live without friends” How does friendship come to be? Like attracts like (birds of a feather) Opposites attract (scientific principle?) Focus on questions concerning character and feeling: Can all people be friends? Can wicked people be friends? Is there one type of friendship?

2 Mutual Goodwill “…when people are friends, they have no need of justice, while when they are just they need friendship as well” (1155a, p.144) Friends know how to treat one another well because friendship is how we seek the “good” through others. Three types of friendships (three reasons how and why we seek friends)

3 Utility and Pleasure Friends Utility – both persons “useful” to the other Pleasure – both persons find/seek pleasure with the other Longevity and significance of these relationships? (see 1156a, p. 146) Are these friendships a means to an end?

4 Complete Friends This type of friendship occurs between persons who are good and are “alike in their virtue,” want good for the other for the sake of the other. This type of friendship is an end in itself? Would you agree “good” friends must be similar and equal?
