Step 2: Research Purpose: Learn why humans have become the most intelligent creatures on Earth.

Some Research. The human species has evolved over the past 125,000 years to become the most dominant and intelligent life form on Earth. However, other species, such as the crocodile, have been around for almost 200 million years, yet have changed very little in their way of life. So, it seems we have done quite well, in a very short amount of time, by comparison to all other species on the planet.

A Question. With this information in mind, please answer the following: –Why have humans evolved dramatically in such a short amount of time? –Why are people more intelligent today than they were 100 years ago? –Why do humans know more than any other species? Hint: One response can answer all three questions.

Answer. Humans record their discoveries so that information can be used and shared by all who come after them. As humans we do not have to learn everything from scratch. Rather, we start from the point our ancestors left off. “If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants." – Sir Isaac Newton

Let Us Get Back to Planes. Please copy the diagram on the board.

Thrust vs. Drag Thrust pulls/pushes the plane forward. Created by… –Write down the part of the plane that creates thrust. Drag pushes against the plane, slowing it down. Due to… –What creates drag on a plane? (What rubs against a plane as it moves forward?)

Lift vs. Gravity Lift pushes a plane up into the air. Created by… –What part of a plane creates lift? Gravity pulls down on a plane. Created by… –What celestial body creates the force that pulls down on the plane?

Question In order for a plane to takeoff, which two forces must be GREATER THAN the other two forces. Lift, Drag, Thrust, Gravity

Research Through Experimentation 1. Everyone create the same plane. 2. Make a single change to your plane. 3. Record the change. 4. Test the plane. 5. Record the effect of the change.

Begin Research!!!! Now As a team, please spend the rest of class researching “How to build a better paper airplane.” Start your search by looking deeper into the aspects of flight we just learned about (lift, gravity, drag, & thrust) and how they can help improve your planes’ capabilities.

Homework Continue your research at home. (Internet, Books, other people, etc.) Devise Five Ways you can improve your plane’s ability to fly. Explain in a few sentences WHY each CHANGE will improve your plane’s ability to fly.
