Nouns Nouns name people, places, things, and ideas. Sally met her new classmates in the hallway. Nouns can be singular or plural. Big celebrations are held every Fourth of July.

Common vs. Proper Proper nouns are always capitalized and name a specific person, place, thing, or idea Common nouns are general, and are not capitalized. Jim bought a new car from a rental company.

Using Nouns Nouns are identified by their use in a sentence. Subject Noun: Hollywood produces films. Predicate Noun: Follows a form of “to be” (is, was, are, etc.) and renames the subject: My town is the capital.

Possessive Noun: My town’s major asset is its people. Object Noun: receives some action in the sentence: You’ll enjoy my town.

Good Nouns, Better Nouns! Concrete nouns name things that can be touched; abstract nouns name something you can’t see or touch Andes Mountains, Venus, pickles, dirt Buddhism, hope, prejudice Specific nouns say more than general nouns. A person rang our doorbell at night. A trespasser rang our doorbell at 3:30 A.M.!
