1
Building Blocks for Life: Being Respectful
2
Defined Someone who is respectful is considerate of others, holding them in high esteem, admiring their good qualities and achievements, being mindful of their feelings and rights.
3
Memory Verses Memory verses for this lesson come from the words of Jesus and the pen of Paul (Matt. 7:12; 1 Cor. 6:19-20).
4
Matthew 7:12, NASB In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
5
1 Corinthians 6:19-20, NASB Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
6
Positive Examples Jonathan Jesus
7
Jonathan Jonathan demonstrated respect toward his father, Saul, and his friend, David, even though he would not be Israel’s next king (1 Sam. 18:1-5; 19:1- 7; 20:12-17, 30-34).
8
Jesus Jesus demonstrated respect for His earthly parents, even though He was the perfect Son of God, superior to them in every way (Luke 2:41-52, esp. vs. 51).
9
Negative Examples Potiphar's Wife Miriam & Aaron
10
Potiphar's Wife Potiphar's wife did not respect her husband (to whom she was untrue), or Joseph (whom she tried to seduce), or her own personal purity, or the truth about what transpired (Gen. 39:1-21).
11
Miriam & Aaron Miriam and Aaron did not respect their brother, Moses, or the divine calling he received from the Lord God (Num. 12:1-15; cf. 16:1-3).
12
Application Respecting God Respecting Family Respecting Others
13
Conclusion & Challenge If we want others to respect us, let us respect them (Matt. 7:12; Luke 6:31). Above all things, let us respect God, exalting His name, keeping His commandments, and worshipping Him in spirit and truth (Prov. 1:7; 9:10; Eccles. 12:13-14; John 4:23-24).
