IBM Cognos ConnectionAccess all data available through IBM Cognos Framework ManagerCreate and publish metadata models on which reports are based. Query Studio and Report Studio can report from all models. Query Studio, Analysis Studio, and Report Studio can report from dimensionally modeled relational data (which can be created in Framework Manager) TransformerCreate and publish cubes on which reports are based. Query Studio, Analysis Studio, and Report Studio all can report from cubes Metric DesignerCreate scorecards and metrics

Framework Manager

Framework Manager (cont’d) Metadata modeling tool that allows you to model relational data Developers have the ability to –Create simpler packages –Change data item names –Change sort order –Change default properties –Create built-in filters

Framework Manager (cont’d) The result of a Framework Manager model is a package(s). When packages are published, this is the first time a report developer can create a report against that data using either Query Studio or Report Studio.

IBM Cognos Connection The portal interface to all of the functionality available in IBM Cognos –View public reports –Create and run reports –Perform administrative tasks –Organize data by creating entries and storing them in folders –Personalize the portal to meet your needs

IBM Cognos Connection (cont’d) Web interface means that nothing needs to be maintained on the user’s desktop. The “primary way to access IBM Cognos functionality” Why? Developers can create hyperlinks to reports directly from another application or Web page. –Can even pass parameters from the other applications to your Cognos report.

Which Studio? Determining whether to use Query Studio, Report Studio, or Analysis Studio to analyze your data and develop reports depends on a number of factors, in addition to your IBM Cognos licensing.

Which Studio? (cont’d) Query Studio is an easy-to-use authoring tool with which you can quickly create simple queries from the data stored in your database without having the skills of a professional report writer. (Limited prompting is available for report design) With Report Studio, you can create advanced reports with more flexibility than any other studio available in Cognos. Report Studio reports can contain charts, maps, lists, repeaters, or any other available report types using static data from relational or multi- dimensional data sources. Use for a more official, published report versus a query or analysis for internal use. Knowledge of SQL fundamentals is helpful. Analysis Studio enables business users to get fast answers to business questions by trending and analyzing your organization’s information assets. Analysis Studio is best for exploring information in multiple dimensions and for deep comparative analysis. (Limited prompting is available for report design)
