Lesson 3: Wave Interactions
2
Interaction of Waves with Matter Absorption: is the transfer of energy by a wave to the medium through which it travels Transmission: is the passage of light through an object Reflection: is the bouncing of a wave off a surface
3
The Law of Reflection Law of reflection: when a wave is reflected from a surface, the angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidence Normal: perpendicular to or forming a right angle with a line or plane
4
Refraction Refraction: is the change in direction of a wave that occurs as the wave changes speed when moving from one medium to another
5
Diffraction Diffraction: the change in direction of a wave when it travels by the edge of an object or through an opening
6
Interference Interference: occurs when waves that overlap combine, forming a new wave – Constructive: when crests overlap with crests and troughs overlap with troughs – Destructive: when a crest of one wave overlap the troughs of another wave
