Religion in France The majority of French are Catholic. There are people who are Jewish, Muslim and Buddhist, also.

Le Noël La Crèche (the Nativity Scene) is the main Christmas decoration –Some French homes have Christmas trees, but not all –The members in the crèche are called, “Santons”. –They are passed down from generation to generation. –The crèche includes all people in a French village, not just the Holy Family

Santa puts presents under the Christmas tree Children leave cookies for Santa A lump of coal for “bad children” Père Noël puts gifts in children’s shoes that are placed under the fire the night before. No cookies for Père Noël Père Fouettard comes and gives “bad children a spanking!”

La Réveillon On Christmas Eve, many French families go to church. Then, they have a large dinner called, “La Réveillon” (meaning to wake up, to revive) The French eat goose or chicken, with sides. French often have a “Bûche de Noël” for dessert

La Bûche de Noël A yule-log cake –A log from a fruit tree that the French would burn throughout Christmas Eve & Christmas Day –Now instead of burning one, a chocolate cake is made.
