2 China China is very diverse, with 56 distinct ethnic groups. The numerically dominant group are the Han Chinese. The incredible variety found in Chinese cuisine may be owed, at least in part, to emperors holding a banquet of 100 dishes every meal. Chinese cuisine in America, Europe, and around the world is rooted in this diversity. Chinese architecture has a history dating back thousands of years. You will see structures dating back millennia, and others in similar styles that may be only ten years old. The rail network in China has doubled in the last 100 years and now services most of the entire nation. Chinese began to split into its many modern dialects around 1,000 years ago. Many of the languages of China are mutually unintelligible. The Chinese government and communist party encourages the use of Mandarin Chinese. 3 China Culture Chinese culture is one of the world's oldest. Today there are 56 distinct recognized ethnic groups in China. Most social values are derived from Confucianism and Taoism. The subject of which school was the most influential is always debated as many concepts such as Neo-Confucianism, Buddhism and many others have come about. 4 Australia Australia is the driest inhabited continent on earth. Its interior has one of the lowest rainfalls in the world and about three-quarters of the land is arid or semi-arid. Australia is ancient and it has some of the oldest geological features in the world. Our most famous rock of course is Uluru in the Northern Territory. Formerly named Ayers Rock. The Australian mainland is in fact the world’s largest island and is often referred to as an island continent. Australia is also surrounded by thousands of smaller islands ranging is size from rocky outcrops to some more than twice the size of the Australian Capital Territory. 5 Australian Culture Australia’s culturally diverse society includes its Indigenous peoples who arrived more than 50,000 years ago, and settlers from countries all around the world. Immigration is an important feature of Australian society. Since 1945, over six million people from 200 countries have come to Australia as new settlers. Migrants have made a major contribution to shaping modern Australia. People born overseas make up almost one quarter of the total population. Their ancestors have inhabited Australia for between 40,000 and 60,000 years, living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle.
