Effects of exercise and Lifestyle
2
» Tidal Volume – the amount of air inspired and expired with each normal breath at rest or during exercise. » Vital Capacity – the greatest amount of air that can me made to pass into and out of the lungs by the most forceful inspiration and expiration. » Oxygen Debt – the extra oxygen consumed during recovery from a period of strenuous exercise in comparison to normal.
3
» Breathing Quickens » Breathing Deepens » Oxygen Debt – more oxygen is needed than normal after strenuous exercise, so breathing may continue to be fast and deep to take in this EXTRA oxygen, even when stopped.
4
» Carbon dioxide is removed more efficiently » Oxygen is transported to the muscles more effectively » Vital capacity increases as the body becomes more efficient » More alveoli for gaseous exchange so more oxygen can pass in to the blood » More capillaries for more oxygen to get in to the blood. » ** More efficient is the key word!
5
Smoking » Damages the lungs, especially the alveoli, making them less stretchy and so less efficient. » This makes is more difficult to get oxygen in and carbon dioxide out making smokers short of breath » Because of this the heart has to work harder to get more oxygen to meet the demands of the body
