What are the goals of tonight? Understand how students are placed in courses. Learn about major assessments for the school year. Gain an overview of the curriculum in each subject area. Learn about ways parents can support students’ academic success this year.

How are students placed? Teacher recommendation District Benchmark data (Galileo) Course effort and academic grades Placement exams Scheduling logistics

What grade level curriculum is my student working on? Each student receives curriculum at his or her instructional level. Teachers will always lean towards the higher level curriculum and provide necessary supports to challenge students.

IGCSE Placement for 2016-17 International Gen. Certificate of Secondary Education Score of 3 or more on Secondary 1 Checkpoint Exam AND two of the following: 80% or more on Stage 9 Coursework. 80% or more effort grade on Stage 9 Coursework. 80% or more on District Benchmark Exams.

Major Assessments District Level: Measured Progress (new) –Replaces Galileo State Level: AzMERIT in April Grades 5-8: Cambridge Testing in May

Social Studies Weekly homework – aligns with topics taught in class Channel One News – daily news show – Current events are the basis for discussions, debates, and student reflections

Math Bellwork - Review of prior grade level standards Content, Homework Assignments, and Tests are based on Cambridge and the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards 144 Quiz – All year until mastery completed by the core class Testing - Bellwork Review and Content Objectives for the week

Language Arts Reading-Literature Studies, Basal, Writing-Personal Narratives, Persuasive, and Expository Vocabulary-Greek and Latin Roots-focus is to increase recognition and use of vocabulary within context Book Reports-Posted on Weebly

Students will have STEM for a Core class two times a week. (90 minute classes.) Students will work on the 4 Cs of STEM; Collaboration, Cooperation, Critical Thinking, Creativity We will do this by working on projects that are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core Math Standards STEM

Students will have STEM for a Special two times a week. (45 minute classes.) We will concentrate on the “T” in STEM, Technology; iPads, Macbooks, Google Chrome Books, Code
