Case Study – Overview of the colonies and significance Jamestown and the New England Colonies September 5, 2014

Objective & Purpose: Objective: Students will analyze the causes and course of the New England Colonies by creating a poster of advertisement. Purpose: To explore the history Early America and understand the greater themes of the “American Revolution” and why people would travel to a “new world”. Standard: 1.2 - Students will compare lifestyles in the New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies according to race, class, and gender by utilizing one of the big 11 social studies skills.

Warm-up: CNN Student News Write down facts as you watch the video. 1 point = 1 correctly written fact. I need to see at least (a minimum of) 5 facts. Example: The Sky = This is NOT a fact. The Sky is Blue = This IS a fact.

Activity: Colonial American Lecture & Discussion “New World” / “Old World” Charter the King granted a charter to the colonial government establishing the rules under which the colony was to be governed. Joint-Stock Company a business entity where different stakes can be bought and owned by shareholders. Royal Colony ruled by a governor appointed by the monarch. Legislature the legislative body of a country or state. Puritans & Separatists Protestants

Assignment: Colonial Advertisement Using Chapter 2, Students will create an advertisement to try to attract people from the “old” world to immigrate to the “new” world. Individually or in pairs. Must be colored.
