2 The Most Dangerous thing in the world is…ideas!  The Modern world was shaped by ‘progressive ideas’ such as Darwinism. How many other ideas could you list?

3 To-Do  Complete Apply 0.7 – Question 1 – Page 12.

4  Capitalism: An economic system that relies on private ownership of industry and means of production. Emphasis is on private individuals and entrepreneurs.  Socialism: Government controls the allocation and distribution of resources and wealth. Means of production are under control of the state.

5 Ideas People  Construct a table that identifies the major ideas that developed in this period, and the main people or events that helped develop them.  Today: Capitalism, Socialism, Egalitarianism, Nationalism.  Use Pages 13-15 as a guide. Major Idea (Name and brief description).People and Events that helped develop them.

7 From the Video:  What was one thing that you learned which you had not known before the video.  Is there anything that you would like to explore from the video? i.e. Something that you would like to learn more about?

8 The American French Revolution  In small groups (2-3 people each) research the American War of Independence and French Revolution and discuss how they helped shape the modern world. American/French RevolutionDetails When it happened. Causes of the revolution (2-3). Notable events (3-4) Key outcomes of the revolution (short term). Key outcomes of the revolution (long term).

9 The Industrial Revolution  Create a flow chart or similar diagram that shows the way that the Industrial Revolution, movement of peoples and progressive ideas were all linked in this period.

10 Extension:  Complete Review 1.1. – page 19.  1 When was the first practical steam engine developed?  2 Put each of the following events in their correct chronological order from the oldest to the most recent: the first powered flight the opening of the world’s first railway line the invention of the first four-wheeled automobile the invention of the first steam locomotive Samuel Morse sends the first commercial message by telegraph.  3 Using the timeline as your only source of information, decide which country produced the most inventions over the course of the Industrial Revolution.

11 To-Do  In 1-2 sentences, explain how each of the following contributed to the development of urban communities:  Factories and textile mills.  Modern towns and cities.  New sources of power.  Improved transport and communication.  Using page 21, provide a brief definition of the middle class. Explain how they have contributed to mass- consumption and education.

12 ‘Twitterature’  At the end of your work - summarise what you have learned this lesson OR what you would like to learn in 140 characters or less.
