Idioms Set 8

Achilles’ Heel  The one weakness, fault, flaw, or vulnerable spot in one’s otherwise strong character.  a small fault in a person or system which might cause them to fail  Achilles was a man in Greek mythology who was killed when he was injured on the heel. This was the only part of his body where he could be harmed.  As a team they're strong on attack but they have a weak defense that might prove to be their Achilles' heel.  I’m an A student in math and science, but social studies is my Achilles’ heel.

Cross that Bridge When You Come to It  To not worry about a possible problem until it becomes an actual problem  Don’t worry about future events now  Don’t deal with a difficulty until you have to  I might need a lawyer, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Full of hot air  Full of nonsense; talking nonsense.  Being foolish; pompous; vain  I don’t believe a word he says. He’s full of hot air!

If the shoe fits, wear it  If a remark applies to you, you should admit that it is true  If an unflattering remark applies to you, so you should accept it.  Some kids never clean up after art class. I’m not mentioning any names, but if the shoe fits, wear it.

Rome was not built in a day  A difficult or important goal or task cannot be achieved quickly or all at once  Something that you say which means that it takes a long time to do an important job  “Sometimes it feels like we've spent all our lives decorating this house.” “Well, Rome wasn't built in a day.”
