Quick Start Expectations 1.Pick up: HWRS 28 and the HW-WS. 2.Fill in planner and HWRS HW WS: FW 2.1 and SBAC Practice 2. Get a signature on HWRS 3. On desk: Toolkit/Process Grid, HWRS, calculator 4.Warm Up: back of HWRS A box measures 3 cm by 4 cm by 5 cm. What is the surface area of the box? What is the volume of the box? What would be the dimensions of other boxes with the same volume? Come up with as many as you can!

A box measures 3 cm by 4 cm by 5 cm. What is the surface area of the box? What is the volume of the box? What would be the dimensions of other boxes with the same volume? Come up with as many as you can! 2(3x4 + 3x5 + 4x5) = 2(12+15+20) = 2(47) = 94 square cm 3 x 4 x 5 = 60 cubic cm 1 x 1 x 60 = 60 cubic cm 2 x 3 x 10 = 60 cubic cm 1 x 2 x 30 = 60 cubic cm 2 x 2 x 15 = 60 cubic cm 1 x 3 x 20 = 60 cubic cm 2 x 5 x 6 = 60 cubic cm 1 x 4 x 15 = 60 cubic cm 1 x 5 x 12 = 60 cubic cm Did you find any others? 1 x 6 x 10 = 60 cubic cm

Toolkit: Add right prism and regular prism p. 27

To find surface area: Find the area of the sides. Find the area of the top and bottom. Add the areas of the sides, top and bottom together. To find volume: Fill the prisms with manipulatives. Compare how much each prism holds. p. 28

Build a set of prisms in teams. Use Labsheet 2.1B to determine areas of tops and bottoms.

93.75 cm² 15.035 cm² 19.531 cm² 21.506 cm² 22.553 cm² 23.576 cm² 108.785 cm² 113.281 cm² 115.256 cm² 116.303 cm² 117.326 cm²

The larger the number of sides, the larger the area enclosed. The surface area is the sum of the area of the faces of the prism. The volume increases as the number of sides increases. A prism with a greater number of sides (the maximum volume is a cylinder). The surface area would be greater.
