Collaborative Education and Research in Renewable Energy and Sustainability COE retreat January 8, 2009

Goals Form clusters in COE to conduct research and education in renewable energy and island sustainability Obtain external funding for these projects (NSF, DOE, military) – NSF IGERT (Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship) Work with state government (HREDV) and industry to provide work force and collaborative research in these areas

Outline NSF IGERT description Education Component – Curriculum – Work with state and Hawaii companies – Recruitment of students Research Themes Collaborations

NSF IGERT Website: http://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/igert/intro.jsp 2009 program announced 12/8: $10.8M in funding. 4 preliminary proposals per institution UH internal deadline: February 16 th Preliminary proposal due March 13 th Full proposals by invitation due Sept. 14 th – 5 years up to $3M funding; $400K first year, $200K startup, $600K succeeding years – Principally to support US Ph.D. students

Pre-proposals Project Summary (1 page) – Research themes and key education and training features – Title (IGERT), PI, and lead institution – Intellectual merit – Broader impacts – Key words (four), three from list

Pre-proposal continued Project description (9 pages) (equal balance between research and education descriptions) – List of participants (1 page max) – Vision, Goals, and thematic basis – Major research efforts – Education and training – Institutional commitment (1 page max) – Other resources and connections (1 page max)

Pre-proposal continued References (1 page max) Biographical sketches (20 max) – PI, (4 co-PIs), other senior personnel Budget- not required Supplementary documentation: 5 letters of commitment, including one from senior administration at UH (2 pages), other letters 1 page

Full Proposal 25 pages In addition to pre-proposal topics: Organization, management, and institutional commitment Performance assessment/ Project evaluation Recruitment, mentoring and retention International collaboration Recruitment and retention history

Educational Component COE RE and Sustainability curriculum – Core courses (Energy conversion (EE, ME), Sustainability (CEE)) – Theme research areas – Economic and social aspects of RE and sustainability Work with state and Hawaii industry on projects Recruitment – Minority and female students – Local students – Mainland students

HREDV – Possible Topics Improving energy efficiency Renewable energy – Interisland cables – Energy for agriculture – Analysis of transmission & distribution – Smart grids – Coupling intermittent sources to grid Alternative transportation – Biofuels – Batteries Education and outreach

HECO: Current Issues Committed to producing 50% of HI power from renewable sources – Mostly wind Need to solve intermittent energy problem – Frequency of generation – Predictability of generation – Smoothing of spikes in power Need to connect island w/ undersea cable – Renewable resources are not evenly distributed – E.g. OTEC: best on west Oahu or west side of Big Island – Geothermal: only on Big Island

Recruitment Minority and Female students – NHSEMP – SWE Local students – Student design projects Mainland students – Recruiting local students that went to mainland institutions for UG education

Research Themes Renewable Energy Sources – Wind – Wave – Solar Integration of RE sources to grid Applications of RE to island sustainability RE Devices Recyclables (Water and Solid Waste) What is common thread? Other themes?

Collaborations At UH Mainland institutions Companies International institutions
